I found a comforting way of applying Zeno's philosophy to my own life. Let's say that I am going to live for eighty eight more years. If I think Zenetianly then that means that in forty four years, I will be half-way between myself now and my supposed death. Twenty-two years past that point I'll be a fourth closer to my death, then an eighth after that, then a sixteenth, etc. etc. As time passes, I'll get closer and closer to the eighty-eight year mark, however I'll never actually get to that point where my life stops. According to Zeno, that must mean death is an illusion.
Did I just cheat the Reaper? I think so.
Also, i just posted this five minutes ago and Bloggers telling me it was posted three hours ago. I'm a time traveller.
ReplyDeleteI love this!! (and definitely agree with you)
ReplyDeleteSo this means that death is predetermined. This is a very interesting thought, but what is death then if it is asymptotic?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I agree with this... that would mean time pretty much stops right before the point of death, getting closer and closer, slower and slower. If time slows down, the days and nights would slow down too, and that is not happening. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but time is continuous. You'll pass those half-way marks you're talking about in "real time."
