Shifting

I'm still a little confused about the b variable or period in trigonometric shifting. To my understanding it determines how many  cycles the curve goes through in the period of 2 pi. I was wondering if I am right in amusing that this does not change the location of the curve but instead puts it in the perspective of 2 pi and describes the width. Does it affect anything else?
