BBC World Video

I just watched the bbc world video. It was so interesting, I really like the graphics that portrayed the stats described, they really helped me. I found it really interesting when the narrator claimed that fertility around the world is decreasing, meaning that women are having an average of 2 1/2 babies instead of 5, which was the average in 1950. I believe that its because the 1950's was the age of the baby boomers, so women were having more children then ever before! And now, all the baby boomers are retired, or close to doing so. So the majority of the population are elderly people, and people in the prime baby-having ages. That is why, I assume, there has been such a rapid increase in population. However, what will happen when the baby boomers die? And women begin to have just a simple average of 2 kids? Our population will significantly decline. I think that we may just be at our all time high population, which describes our range, our range may be at its maximum right now, thus, the only way we can go from here is back down!
Just some ideas.
Anyone have any other ideas on the video??

  1. you dont have half of a baby, jordan!!
but an average can include half a baby, meaning that the majority of women have 2 and 3 babies, so take the arithmetic mean (average) of that and you will get 2 and a half babies.

... unless there are some unspeakably unorthodox baby splitting traditions going on.. but i doubt it.

  2. I wonder what the ages of the women they poll are. They can't poll all women because some physically can't have babies. They also have those freak cases where a handfull of very young or very old people have a kid. Does this mean they have to poll that entire age group because of a few people? That would bring the average down significantly.

  3. Jordan, You ask a very good question: Would you mind asking one or more of our Stats students this question? Let us know what you find out and, incidentally, how many do you think you need to ask?

  4. Jordan I was wondering the same thing about what age groups of women they poll. Handful? Maybe for the old people but there are a significant amount of young people having kids. And in that case statistics show that when young women under a certain age (I cant remember the specifics) have a child, they're most likely going to have another one before like age 21 or so. I think that would affect the average too because if those young girls later get married then they will probably have more children. I think they need to poll the entire age group from when women are able to repreoduce. The average would decrease but I don't know if it would be a major dip. We also have to remember that in some countries age of consent differs, and it may be common for young women to have children. Therefore the entire group should be polled.
